Guilty Pleasure: Wafflemeister in London, UK

Belgian waffles topped with rich gelato ice cream, chocolate sauce and juicy, sweet red strawberries. I'm not sure if anything could sound yummier during this summer season... Sitting outside with the hint of a gentle, cool breeze and that delightful summer sunshine you can only wish for in your dreams.

Just imagine it. Freshly warmed belgian waffles with slightly sweet, crispy, sugary coating on the outside. But wait, then comes the luscious scoop of creamy, dreamy gelato...And yet, there's more. Bite sized pieces of seasonal summer strawberries are put alongside the ice cream all waiting to be drizzled with rich melted chocolate.

Wafflemeister is THE ultimate place to go. Even though I only have two photos, they sum it all up. I don't think any more words are needed. Highly recommended!

Chilli Crab... and Reverse Bungy!

If you've been reading any of my past posts, I'm sure you know by that I am leaving Singapore... which means... I've made a summer list (NOT bucket list - that connotes death!) of things I want to do before I leave Singapore this Sunday. On this list, unsurprisingly, includes a long list of restaurants but also a few other tidbits. The most important thing I promised myself I would do is the GMAX Reverse Bungy located in one of Singapore's most happening nightlife spots - Clarke Quay! Well anyways... I DID THE BUNGY NOT ONCE, BUT TWICE! It was such a blast! Here's photos of both the times I went (note how I did one during daylight hours and one at night to get the full experience!)
Anyways, I got a bit carried away up there.. but this bungy is amazing: thrilling, fun, you even get a good view!

But back to what this post is supposed to be about: CHILLI CRAB. If you come to Singapore and don't eat chilli crab, I would suggest you take a flight back down here just to get a taste of this local dish with the most mouth watering flavors and crab.. yum. Fresh mud crabs are cooked and placed in a chilli- and tomato-based gravy. Corn flour and beaten eggs help to thicken and flavor the gravy. You MUST be prepared to get down and messy to enjoy the whole experience. The crab is served completely with its shell on and the dish has to be eaten with one's hands. Don't worry, restaurants provide plenty of washing bowls and wet towels as well as clampers to crack the crab shell and long picks to help get the flesh out. Oh and one more thing... DEEP FRIED BUNS. Yum-my! They have a slightly sweet flavor and are best used to dip into the gravy!

The Most Delicious, Nutritious and Comforting Bowl of Oatmeal

So, as I mentioned in my last post, my family is moving to London.. This means that we're basically trying to clean up as much as possible and especially focus on finishing the ingredients left in out fridge/kitchen/pantry before having to buy just a few necessary items. It so happened to be that we had just the right amount of oats and tons of mix-ins for oatmeal, so when I woke up this morning, I was about to ask my mom whether she wanted me to make us both yummy bowls of oatmeal... when SHE called me from the kitchen and questioned, "Oatmeal today?". I guess that's why we're mother-daughter!

Of course, following this, I did. I grabbed some milk, some water, and the leftover baby oats (which just happened to be the perfect amount for both of us!) and heated them on the stove top. I mixed in a pinch of white sesame seeds, cinnamon and a chopped apple. I continued to stir until creamy and fragrant (the waft of healthy apple pie in the bowl permeated throughout mmm..). I divided the oatmeal into two bowls and topped with chopped pecans, cranberries and a drizzle of honey. It was time to enjoy!

There's the reflection of my mom sitting across from me! Oh, and it was DELISH and obviously healthy too!

Ya Kun Kaya Toast

It's been a fantastic an unforgettable ten years, Singapore... but it's now time for me to move on. Singapore, you will always be in my heart and will always be my home, but I'm just going on an extended vacation for a bit.. to London! Things are a bit crazy around the house with all the packing and such, but my family never fails to make time for a quick trip to our absolute favorite coffee stop in Singapore - Ya Kun Kaya Toast.

Kaya toast, frosty coffee and Kopi-C-kosong.
We first ventured here to try a "must try" Singaporean speciality - kaya. In all honesty, I'm not the greatest fan but both my parents, sister and the rest of Singapore is definitely in love with it. Not to worry though, this place has several other options such as peanut butter toast, ice cream toast, frosty blends, milo and the like.

I guess I haven't addressed what exactly kaya toast is. It's two extremely thin and crispy slices of toast (perfectly heated) slathered with a good dose of kaya and slices of cold butter (the best part and a must have!). Kaya is a spread of eggs, sugar, coconut milk and flavored with pandan - yes it sounds weird and exotic.. but I promise you it's not.

When I go with my family, we usually end up ordering the same thing: two plates of kaya toast for my parents and sister to share, iced milo for the sister, frosty coffee for me (better than a Starbucks frappucino!) and two Kopi-C-kosong's (coffee with evaporated milk but no sugar) for my parents. The coffee is potent, delicious and... YUM.
The original kaya toast. Mmmm!
My frosty!!!
