Ya Kun Kaya Toast

It's been a fantastic an unforgettable ten years, Singapore... but it's now time for me to move on. Singapore, you will always be in my heart and will always be my home, but I'm just going on an extended vacation for a bit.. to London! Things are a bit crazy around the house with all the packing and such, but my family never fails to make time for a quick trip to our absolute favorite coffee stop in Singapore - Ya Kun Kaya Toast.

We first ventured here to try a "must try" Singaporean speciality - kaya. In all honesty, I'm not the greatest fan but both my parents, sister and the rest of Singapore is definitely in love with it. Not to worry though, this place has several other options such as peanut butter toast, ice cream toast, frosty blends, milo and the like.

I guess I haven't addressed what exactly kaya toast is. It's two extremely thin and crispy slices of toast (perfectly heated) slathered with a good dose of kaya and slices of cold butter (the best part and a must have!). Kaya is a spread of eggs, sugar, coconut milk and flavored with pandan - yes it sounds weird and exotic.. but I promise you it's not.

When I go with my family, we usually end up ordering the same thing: two plates of kaya toast for my parents and sister to share, iced milo for the sister, frosty coffee for me (better than a Starbucks frappucino!) and two Kopi-C-kosong's (coffee with evaporated milk but no sugar) for my parents. The coffee is potent, delicious and... YUM.

Churros con Chocolate: Spain!

No words to describe this beauty!

Hi guys. Sorry long time no post. Last week was an amazing one! I spent spring break in Spain with my wonderful family. We traveled to Granada, Sevilla and ended our trip in Barcelona. The trip was overall fantastic and spending time with my family is my favorite pastime of all time (YES I love it). Obviously, it goes without saying that food in Spain was beyond amazing - the sweet, the savory, the tapas, the ice cream, the paella... the list just goes on.

But one cannot leave Spain with trying churros dipped in thick, rich, dark chocolate. It is a local delight... and to die for. The warm crispy churros are sprinkled with a generous dousing of sugar. They are then served with a cup of chocolate (it's thick enough to be eaten with a spoon!)

The first photo below is the graffiti on the closed door of the cafe (isn't it absolutely amazing and cute?).

Next comes my first day of trying this drool-inducing treat. I had the most classic version (just a tad of sugar and plain chocolate).

Second time's the charm (referring to the two pictures above) - churros with lotsa sugar and "Swiss" chocolate (the same thick chocolate topped with a huge dollop of freshly whipped cream). YUM!

All I can say is this: churros and chocolate are a combination made in heaven. Do not, I repeat, do not visit Spain and pass up an opportunity to change your life!

Strawberry. Chocolate. Custard. TART.

Fruit tarts. Boy, do I love them! But this one: topped with strawberries, a chocolate covered strawberry and filled with the most delicious custard cream ever... Heaven in my mouth. I ate this as a post-Valetnine's day treat with my lovely mom. We both ate the same amazing tart and relished it together with smiles on our faces. We had a great chat and it was so nice to spend some quality time with her before I embarked on my journey to Tanzania (which, by the way, was out of this world!). 

Wondering why I shared this? Well, for one - just look at that gorgeous photo. Two, I love love love love love fruit tarts. And three, it's STRAWBERRY and CHOCOLATE (catch the hint?!).
